A Symbol of Humility

A humble Dodge Ram pickup, gifted by Mexico for Pope Francis’ 2016 visit, became an enduring symbol of his legacy when it served as his funeral hearse in 2025. This Mexican-made truck, a Popemobile for vibrant crowds, carried the Pope on his final journey through Rome, embodying his lifelong commitment to simplicity.

The Mexican Popemobile’s Origins

In February 2016, Pope Francis visited Mexico. To navigate massive crowds in Mexico City, Ecatepec, and Ciudad Juárez, the Vatican used a white Dodge Ram 1500, modified into a Popemobile with a standing platform and protective shield. Donated by Mexico to mark 25 years of diplomatic ties with the Vatican, this Stellantis México-manufactured truck was a practical and symbolic gift.

A Reflection of Francis’ Values

Pope Francis, the “people’s pope,” was known for rejecting extravagance, favoring modest vehicles like the Fiat 500L. The Dodge Ram, a workhorse pickup, aligned perfectly with his personality. Its open design allowed him to connect with millions during his Mexican tour, a stark contrast to the fortified Popemobiles of the past. This truck embodied his call to remain close to the crowd.

From Celebration to Farewell

On April 21, 2025, Pope Francis passed away at 88 after a stroke. His funeral on April 26 drew hundreds of thousands of mourners to Rome, including world leaders. Honoring his wish for simplicity, the Vatican chose the Mexican Popemobile over a traditional hearse. The Dodge Ram carried his single wooden coffin along a four-mile route past the Colosseum to Santa Maria Maggiore, moving crowds to tears and applause.

A Legacy Across Borders

The truck’s journey—from Mexico’s cheering streets to Rome’s solemn procession—mirrors Francis’ papacy, uniting cultures through humility. As the first Latin American pope, his connection to the Mexican gift was meaningful. X posts from Mexican outlets like El Universal and La Jornada expressed national pride in the truck’s role, a gift that served the Pope in life and death.

The Mexican Popemobile’s story is one of faith and simplicity. A Dodge Ram, born in Mexico, carried Pope Francis to the people in 2016 and to his eternal rest in 2025.
